Univ. of San Francisco Debate

Sean and I went to a debate at the University of San Francisco a couple weeks ago and found out that Sean's picture was in the school paper. :-)

Peaceful Israel-Palestinian Resolution Doubtful

By Staff Writer: Chelsea Sterling

Israel/palestine conflict discussed

Students, professors and faculty packed into Xavier Chapel to witness the discussion turned debate about a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Freshman Gus Shamieh, center, waited to ask Consul General Akiva Tor a question. (Nicholas Mukhar|Foghorn)

The question Palestine and Israel: Peace or Perpetual Conflict? prompted strong questions and responses from staff, students and community members on Wednesday, who crowded into Xavier Hall to hear Consul General Akiva Tor and California State University at Stanislaus politics professor As’ad AbuKhalil extrapolated on the current crisis between the two warring countries.

The structure of the discussion lent itself to a debate rather than a stifled academic lecture style talk. The format allowed each speaker 20 minutes to present information and background history and then they had a five minute time to issue a rebuttal. In addition, a 40 minute period was added to elicit questions and comments from the audience. Tor began by defending Israel’s past attacks on Palestinian territory. Of the six day war in 1967, he said that it was “a pre-emptive strike (by Israel) in self-defense.” Although Tor has hope that a peaceful resolution can be made, he expressed doubt in individual negotiations between the two countries. He said, “Palestinian politics are in disarray.” Citing the Oslo Accords which were signed by then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat in 1993 (for which they both won the Nobel Peace Prize), Tor argued that a peaceful resolution can be reached when the right political players are involved. He said, “There will be peace. I don’t know when, but there will be.”

AbuKhalil countered by saying that Tor’s argument was part of a “well-funded propaganda campaign by Israel.” He pointed out that attacks on Palestinians preceded the six day war, thus the violence initiated by Israeli was not part of a pre-emptive strike, like Tor had stated. AbuKhalil pointed holes in Tor’s version of the history of the conflict by recounting Israel’s occupation of multiple territories, like Tunisia, Sudan, and Egypt, and the atrocities committed by Israeli soldiers that guard the border. He said, “They (Israelis) conveniently talk about peace while their soldiers kill Palestinian civilians.” AbuKhalil did not seem to foresee a resolution to the conflict that has continued for over fifty years. The audience applaused as he said, “I believe in all forms of boycott against the state of Israel. We (the United States) should boycott the state of Israel. We should not negotiate with terrorists.” In response to the audience, Tor said “I hear the applause and you are all making a terrible mistake. You are all out of touch with the world.” He defended Israeli’s position as a nation-state and said that Palestinian nationalism is a modern phenomenon. To further incite a strong, heated response from AbuKhalil, Tor pointed out that he never looked at him and said “I wish you would humanize me in some way, maybe by looking at me.” Looking straight ahead toward the crowded audience, AbuKhalil responded, “I will treat you like you treated Palestinians in Gaza.”

Several members of the audience walked up to the microphone to question Tor on his presentation and responses to AbuKhalil. Freshman Gus Shamieh asked him, “How can you justify the most recent attacks on Gaza when Israeli soldiers are saying they feel like they have committed war crimes?” Tor said, “Hamas was armed. Israel has the right to defend itself.” From the boisterous responses and applause from the audience, it became clear that they too felt that a resolution was not close at hand.

Spoke too soon

Well I won't be getting a dog after all. Oy.

I'm getting a dog!

That is correct! My husband is the best. :-) I'm going to be getting a dog as soon as I'm out of school for the summer. I am definitely looking for a small dog under 25 lbs., either pure bred or mix. I will be looking at adopting a puppy or as old as 1 year, but am also thinking about buying a puppy from a breeder potentially.

So if you know anyone who has puppies or will be having puppies, let me know!

I found the cutest dog at the Turlock shelter. It's the dog in the second row, and three dogs to the right.

When's Spring Break???

I think it's safe to say that I've grown accustomed to having spring break in March and now it's not until the middle of April. I think I'm starting to suffer from senioritis, and I still have to finish this semester and next fall semester. Oy, I wish I was done this school year. :-(

I'm very much over going on trips longer than a day for now but it would be fun to go to Disneyland or Six Flags over spring break....hmmmmm.

He's Just Not That Into You

For once there was a "chick-flick" that was realistic. You can totally recognize similar incidents in your life where you thought the guy liked you but in reality he was totally blowing you off in a cowardly way.

I liked how the movie showed the reverse where the girl was the bad guy. And she was one skanky slut. lol.

Movies like this remind me how much I love the fact that I don't have to date and how lucky I am to have found a wonderful man that I trust and love with all my heart. I am truly lucky. :-)

2 More Semesters

I'm so happy to report that I have just two semesters left at Stanislaus before I graduate. This semester I'm taking 4 political science classes, and then I'll just have 13 units left in the fall. I CANNOT wait! I may look into finding a different job next spring since I won't be starting law school until the following fall. I'm not sure what law schools I want to apply to, but I definitely want to apply to UCLA, Berkeley, and Irvine. Irvine has a new law program that pays for all three if you are accepted. It would be nice not to have any loans.

The Irony!

I was browsing around on imdb.com to see what Liam Neeson is working on these days. And to my surprise I saw he's working on a movie called.....Chloe. Now as if that wasn't ironic enough, Liam is the name I would like to name a son someday. Crazy! I guess this means the name Liam was a good pick. And even more ironic, Amanda Seyfried is supposed to be in it, who was in Veronica Mars. And as I'm writing this I am watching VM

It's the twilight zone.

I hope the movie is good. It does have my name on it after all. ;-)

Friday Morning Massacre

So originally the store manager of Target promised that she would make sure that if someone called off that someone else would get their hours. Until today. Apparently she called the manager on duty this morning to cut 100 hours total today. Meaning nobody can pick up a shift, they've been sending people home early, and that there is nobody in guest services for 2 hours today. They've also been calling people trying to get them to not come in to work.

Yay for promises.

New Ringtone!

I finally got my stupid Internet to work on my phone. How you ask? No freaking clue.

The point is I don't have to listen to the "You can't always get what you want" chorus every time my phone rings. Instead I have "Float" by Flogging Molly. Oh yes, they're Irish! I can't help it, there's just something about Irish bands I just love. I was going to pick a Gaelic Storm song but they only had two to choose from, so Flogging Molly won the day.

Check out the band if you get the chance. :-)
